Skypixels, a Nigerian technology company, has taken a significant step forward in Africa’s evolving innovation ecosystem by launching the country’s first large-scale drone light show, an accomplishment that highlights the continent’s growing capability in advanced manufacturing, digital engineering, and creative technology.
The unveiling is more than simply a new kind of entertainment; it signals a broader shift in Africa toward developing and deploying advanced technology locally.
In Nigeria, it represents the beginning of local enterprises combining hardware, software, and creative design to produce globally competitive goods.

The exhibition featured a coordinated fleet of 1,000 drones, each equipped with high-precision navigation systems such as GPS and real-time kinematic (RTK) technology.
These systems provide outstanding flying precision, stability, and synchronization, demonstrating the growing technical depth of African-built solutions in domains previously controlled by foreign producers.
The drones operated autonomously, following precisely planned flight courses created by a team of Nigerian engineers and programmers, the Punch reports.
The result was a continuous aerial performance in which light, motion, and storytelling combined to produce animated pictures in the night sky, ranging from text to intricate graphical patterns.
The event, which took place on March 22, 2026, at the Lagos Polo Club in Ikoyi, highlighted how local expertise is transitioning from software to integrated systems that need precision engineering, embedded system design, and advanced programming.

Speaking at the occasion, Skypixels founder and CEO Rotimi Makanjuola described the innovation as part of a global shift away from traditional fireworks and toward more sustainable and versatile digital alternatives.

“What we have here tonight is called a drone show. If you look at past innovations, we used to have fireworks, which people use during most celebrations. The use of fireworks has its own safety concerns aside from the impact on the environment. So, there has been a shift from that entertainment style into something that is more contemporary and modern,” Rotimi stated.
“The advantage is that drones are used to do something similar to fireworks, but even more than what fireworks do. Fireworks can just give you some colour displays and sounds, but this is able to give you graphics and text in an animated way as well.
These are GPS-enabled drones with RTK that hook up to GPS and enable stability during flight. So, you need programmers who would work on the sequence or flight path that it is going to take,” he added.
While fireworks have traditionally been associated with festivities, they pose environmental and safety risks.
Drone light shows, on the other hand, provide a cleaner and significantly more adaptable medium for creating dynamic animations, branded content, and immersive storytelling experiences.
He stated that, unlike pyrotechnics, which can only produce bursts of color and sound, drone displays can be programmed to generate moving images, text, and elaborate designs in real time.
This level of customisation is made possible by advanced flight programming, which allows each drone to follow a distinct, predetermined path within a wider coordinated system.
Concerned about mid-air collisions, the business stated that each drone is allocated a unique trajectory within the larger dance.
