Google is delving further into the future of medicine and biological science with a new program that aims to combine two of today’s most disruptive technologies: quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Google has announced the Research Program at the Intersection of the Life Sciences and Quantum AI (REPLIQA), directed by Google Quantum AI and supported by Google.org.

As part of the program, Google.org will contribute $10 million to assist research at five leading academic institutions in the United States, to unlock breakthrough discoveries in biology and human health.

Quantum computers, unlike traditional machines, are based on the same principles that govern molecular behavior, allowing them to imitate biological systems more intuitively and efficiently.

Researchers think that this will eventually speed up medication discovery, enhance illness models, and provide more understanding of how the human body works.

Google claims that recent advances in quantum sensing have already allowed scientists to see biological activity with unparalleled detail.

Some studies even imply that quantum effects, such as particle spin, may influence how living cells behave, a field that remains largely unexplored.

The REPLIQA program will fund research at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California, San Diego, University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Arizona, all of which are currently involved in sophisticated biological and quantum research.

Google recognizes that practical achievements may take years, but the goal is to provide the basic tools required for the next generation of medical discoveries.

If successful, the program has the potential to transform how science perceives life itself.
